Todd and two of his bestest friends, Hack and Slash, are currently in the
Middle East on a USO tour. This is something the three of them have done
for the last three years, and they have dubbed it...

Todd is sending emails to a Montessori School class that is tracking his whereabouts
during the tour. We thought it would be interesting to share his messages with you.

NEWS FROM THE FRONT LINE:

MARCH.24.2006
In a few hours I'll be headed up to Iraq.  I don't know what my communication
will be like up there so I thought I'd send this now.

They gave us our itinerary but I'm not allowed to discuss it.  I will tell you two
places we are going though – Taleel (not sure of spelling), and Balad (not sure of spelling).
See if you can find them on a map.

PS:  We'll be flying Blackhawks the whole time we're up there.  woo hoo.

We're in Kuwait right now.  We just finished a huge show at Camp Buering up on the Iraq border.
We spent 5 days in Bahrain just twiddling our thumbs doing nothing.
They couldn't get us out to the boats... it was very frustrating.
Now the tour is back on track and we felt like we were very needed tonight.
Probably about 800 soldiers attended.

Tomorrow, we do another Kuwait base & then up to Iraq.  Woo hoo

Just to give you a time reference I'm emailing you at 12:30 AM my time....meanwhile it's 4:30 pm your time.
We just finished our last night in Djibouti and will be leaving in the morning.
We went out to an orphanage today and had fun playing with the kids.
They speak French here so we had a little language barrier to deal with,
and I kept asking for names and could not figure out any of them.
It was good, we all laughed.

Um.....it's late so I should go get to bed.

MARCH.15.2006
Today they let us go off base to downtown Djibouti, Djibouti.  What an adventure!
They said be careful...you will be accosted my the merchants and children and beggars.
Also in the market the cars will fly by so fast mon the narrow roads, so stay on the side or you will get hit.

Not 30 minutes into walking through the market, was I hit by a car.  Luckily it was only the side veiw window
that struck me.  No damage, but I was shocked as the guy never even glanced back to see if i was ok.
It's Crazy in Djibouti!  We were laughing quite a bit down there in the market.  We had a huge entourage
of people trying to sell us things.  I bought a couple trinkets and had my eye on a cool old mask.  the guy said in broken english that it was and antique buried for 400 years before he excavated it.  then he said it would cost me
$350 american dollars.  I offered him $50 and wouldn't budge.  He came down to $100 but no further.
I asked him if he had an old mask that had only been buried for 200 years but he didn't get the joke I was making.

The people are dressed so colorfully.  I wanted to take peoples pictures.  I offered a woman $1 to take
her picture and I thought she might but the crowds got hostile at me and I had to walk away.  They have a thing
about pictures...like it steals their souls.  I took a picture of the Street we were on and a merchant walked out
and told me "that will be $2" ha ha.  My friend John still had about $10 worth of Emirate money (from UAE) so he
waited until he found just the right person...and eventually gave the money to a young boy who seemed
sweet & polite.  Everyone rushed the boy and for a moment we thought the boy would be beat up at the
moment of his great fortune.

We did a very fun show back on base tonight.  the show still isn't perfect but it's getting better.

We even have airconditioning in our tent...woo hoo!

It looks like we'll be here for atleast 2 days as we have 2 shows slotted.

I haven't had time to shave my head yet.  I guess tomorrow will be the day.
